Pack A Tire ChangeThe Planet

Tire Dumps

The State of Ohio burns nearly 47,000 tires per day in two tire incineration facilities. This has been going on for years and many are working to end this practice that is so harmful to the environment. The most recent achievements by environmental activist has been the closing of the tire facility in Columbus, Ohio in 2002.

Earthships utilize thousands of tires which are filled with dirt and packed to form a solid brick. These bricks are packed in place and stacked similar to how traditional masonry bricks are mortared together. Our Earthship here on the farm has approximately 1000 tires which forms an 1100 sq. ft foundation.

Ohio Earthship ProjectIn Ohio alone the state could recycle the 47,000 tires being refined or wasted, reducing the carbon footprint dramatically. Also to mention these tires could build 56 - 1100s' homes each day in our great state! That's an astonishing 56 homes a day.! What are we waiting for?

Unfortunately the dependence on manufactured building materials is so strong not even the local building developers or government offices know what to do or say about an extreme alternative building method.   The Earthship method of construction that has been researched for 30 years by Architect Michael Reynolds in Taos, New Mexico. Reynolds is a graduate of University of Cincinnati. Few people realize that the UC campus was actually the the location for the construction of the first Earthship structure, built by Reynolds and his classmates.

These Earthship structures not only consist of tires but also utilize glass and aluminum cans. These recycled materials are very stable and can be used as filler and partition walls in any structure. Because they are not conventional building materials, the methods are often frowned upon in some cultures. Clinton County, Ohio, however, is already working ahead of the curve by embracing innovation and green methods.

Peaceful Acres Lavender Farm has recently become partners with Energize Clinton County (ECC).
